Dad gave Jon this book for Christmas "The Omnivore's Dilemma" by Michael Pollan and I started reading it this week. It is a very thorough, very detailed book on the history and culture that has led up today's food economy.
The book is very specific, very detailed and very interesting.
American farmers, crops and engineered foods are all addressed, in addition to the diet habits of Americans (good and bad), the economic impact of crops, pests and organic matter.
Did you know that almost 100% of items sold at grocery stores are composed of the major crop of the USA? Any guesses on what that crop is?
From food products to sweeteners (corn syrup, etc) to even the bags that groceries are packed in, all come from corn.
Interesting read, more like a text book, but very in depth and very new information for me.
