"Can Johnny come out and eat?"

According to this article 1 in 5 four year olds are considered obese.  The article goes on to mention statistics about various races, etc.  The bottom line is that America's poor eating habits are catching up with us.
Lack of daily exercise and decent nutrition are causing even the youngest Americans to be classified as obese.  The average weight of a 4 year old girl should be between 28 and 40 pounds, the average weight of a 4 year old boy should be between 26 and 45 pounds.  (Height is a factor).  It is quite common to see 4 year olds that weigh over 50 pounds and look like 6 year olds.
The article goes on to discuss "possible causes" including gestational diabetes in the mother while she was pregnant...
However, it doesn't take a scientist or study to see that the population as a whole is becoming larger.  What is scary is that in children as young as four, we are noticing it.
If children lead a sedentary life and learn sedentary habits, they will lead a short, mecically problematic and possible painful life.  The inability for a 4 year old to run across a park without getting winded, not be able to play a game of soccer or run around like "a kid".
Can you imagine what they will be like as teenagers?

It's interesting to read articles like these when I have a son who is "off the charts" in the other direction. I give him pediasure bars and drinks and try to bulk him up. But then again, my daughter is at the other end of the spectrum and D and I argue over whose belly she has inherited. LOL.
