I just heard of this very interesting phrase known as "the keeping room" from colonial times. The "keeping room" was a room off the kitchen that was heated by the warmth of the stove. Families would sleep in the room in the winter and cold months and children would play there while the mother cooked.
Today, keeping rooms are also called family rooms, etc and the purpose is similar, even though families don't need to sleep there to stay warm.
Our new room has been the most used room in the house. I love that I can prepare dinner and have the kids working on homework or Jon on the computer.
Our new addition needed a name and I have been calling it the addition, but now it will be known as the Keeping Room.
