Pizza originated in Naples, Italy and has as many variations as there are grains of salt in a salt shaker.
Pizzas even are sweet desserts made with a pastry crust and pears, cinnamon and sugar. And then there is the "kiddie" version of a large sugar cookie decorated with frosting and candy and called a pizza, even though it is technically not.

Through the years, pizza toppings have adapted with food trends - buffalo chicken pizza, shaved steak and cheese, white pizza made without any traditional tomato topping.
But, food trends in PIZZA TODAY now talk about fruit on a savory pizza!
Not a dessert, but a savory dish- think of a salad with onions and berries or apples.

Pear and Prosciutto Pizza - using canned pears in syrup to prevent them from shriveling up and burning
Mango Salsa Pizza - a very healthy recipe from the Mayo Clinic - uses green peppers, pineapple and mango!
Pear, Mozzarella and Caramelized Onion Pizza - from 1001 Recipes
Ham & Pineapple Pizza from Giada deLaurentis

A very different way to have pizza, but sounds yummy
