State of Things in the USA...

We've had strange weather this spring and into summer, but nothing says strange like last week's events here in the States.
First, Conan O'Brien gave the commencement speech at Dartmouth.  Not only that, but he was given an honorary degree from one of the most prestigious colleges in the world.  When I first heard this, I balked.  I mean, really?  Dartmouth produces neurosurgeons, cancer researchers, molecular biologists, world leaders and the like.  And they gave an honorary degree to a comedian? Well, the answer is yes.
But, I was unaware that Conan O'Brien is a smart cookie unto his own right.  He graduated from Harvard. His speech was fantastic.  He was both gracious and funny.  He poked fun at himself, at Dartmouth for giving him the degree and at students and parents.  He addressed everyone who attended the graduation from educators to spectators.  I watched his speech on the internet and chuckled out loud.  I was amused and impressed.  (However, I do think that the whole Honorary Degree is a slap in the face to anyone who has worked for years to obtain a legitimate one.)  Here is a link to the transcript of his speech if you are interested.
And then we have another story that is both pitiful and disgraceful.  The Anthony Weiner Saga.  Weiner (real name, not one of my jokes) and his wiener's claim to fame is that he is a Representative to the House, a Democrat from NY.  Oh, and he also has a penchant for posting pics of himself on Twitter.  And by pics of himself, I mean his wiener.   And he not only posts them proudly, he sends them to various women whom he also met on Twitter.  It seems that each day brings new and damning pics and new women, the youngest of which is 17.  Oh, and Weiner is married to one of Hilary Clinton's aides.  Oh, and he refuses to resign.
His behavior is repulsive and clearly, not upstanding.  While there are calls for him to resign, the political machine is at work trying to keep him in office.  Democrats give him a free pass because he is registered to their party (his wife has pull as well and she is standing by him from Asia).  Even the president who states that if he were in the same position as Weiner, he "might resign".  I tell you, if party leaders had any integrity, any respectability, they would demand his resignation and move forward making their own party more respectable.  They wouldn't cling to the belief that if you have a party affiliation than you are given a free pass.
Can you imagine what would happen if the local schoolteacher/plumber/postmaster posted pics of his private parts?  He might be investigated for indecent exposure, soliciting etc.  At the very least, he would lose his job.
