What the? Illegal Garden for Homeowner?

Photo from The Agitator, Oak Park, Michigan

A woman from Oak Park, Michigan was brought up on charges for..... planting a garden in her front yard.  Yes.  You read that correctly.  After her front yard was torn up from a broken sewer line, she decided to place her raised beds neatly in her front yard.  She planted cabbage, tomatoes, carrots and the like.  But, someone from the neighborhood complained to the town officials.  The town government came out and warned her to move the gardens to the back of the yard, as they violated code.
City code says that all unpaved portions of the site shall be planted with grass or ground cover or shrubbery or other suitable live plant material
The woman interpreted the "suitable live plant material" to include her garden.  She refused to move her garden and charges were pressed.  She now has a court date and faces possible jail time (up to 90 days) for her crime.

The owner set up her own blog, here is one of her earlier entries about the situation.

And now, my thoughts on the subject...

Here we have another example of town government out of control.  Various codes and laws are in effect, at least theoretically, to preserve public health, safety and property values.  No one wants to live near a messy neighbor, a hoarder or junk car collector.  But, remember we each have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.  While I might prefer a house without any lawn furniture or kid's toys in the yard, do I have a right to demand that of my neighbor?
Look up your own local laws, you will be surprised what you find.  Neighborhoods have been transformed from communities to municipalities governed by local politicians.  Instead of personal choices or freedoms making our choices about our own homes, we are now swamped with laws.  These laws dictate house color, contents or properties and where you can park a vehicle on your own land.  With increased taxes comes reduced freedoms, as now your tax dollars pay for the government agents that police these frivolous codes.
Who gave the government this authority over us?  We did when we voted for these agencies and laws.  We do this every time we re-elect career politicians.  They in turn gain their power by rewarding favored agents, agencies and individuals who support their careers at the expense of taxpayers.  We need to reduce government immediately.  We need to reduce taxes and stop losing our freedoms.
