Birthday Cakes

The birthday party went well.  Because Jon's parents 84th birthdays were only 3 days apart, we celebrated together.  We could have had a single cake, but wanted to address each birthday. And besides, Jon's father is a chocolate fiend, while his mother prefers something lighter.
Here is the chocolate cake before the candles were lit and the cake sliced.
And the more dainty white cake.  Sort of white cake...
And the presentation.  Cue the Happy Birthday song...
And Ashley bringing her grandmother the birthday cake.
The chocolate devil's food cake.  The middle layer is pure fudge.  Yes, pure fudge.  The cake was just what the birthday boy ordered, but far too chocolatey for my taste.
And here is the first slice removed.  The polka dot surprise inside was colorful and unexpected.  And a big hit!
I followed the instructions on onceuponapedestal's blog for making a Polka Dot cake.  Her instructions are great and her method, while time consuming, is easy!  Bake the spheres of cake in a cake ball pan ahead of time.  After they have cooled, you simply bake them in a cake pan, placing cake batter around the cooked spheres.  Bake as normal.  It came out well and everyone was surprised by the colors.
And here are two slices of cake side by side.  I far prefer the pretty polka dot one!
