Glazes for Scones

Some people equate glazes on scones like gilding a lily, an unnecessary and indulgent extra. Sure, it's another form of sugar, but on scones I think it works well!  Scones are a tasty treat like a muffin but made with less sugar. They are portable, easy to make and come in so many flavors!  Unlike muffins, scones are best when they are a little dry, even day old or more. A drizzle of sweet glaze can invigorate a crumbly scone into something a little more special than day old pastry.  Poetically, glazes are as easy to make as the scones themselves and can be made in many, many flavors from most things common to a pantry.
The most basic glaze recipe is simply powdered sugar and water, but glazes become even more decadent with the addition of melted butter, salt, extract and milk or cream in place of water.  When mixing these recipes, slowly add the wet ingredients and add just enough to make the glaze thin enough to pour, but not too watery.  Alternately, you can add additional powdered sugar if the glaze is too loose.

Basic Glaze - 1 cup powdered sugar + 2 T water
Vanilla Glaze - 1 cup powdered sugar, 2 T liquid (water, milk or cream) 1 tsp vanilla extract
Spiced Glaze - 1 cup powdered sugar, 2 T liquid (water, milk or cream) 1 tsp vanilla extract, 1/2 tsp cinnamon, 1/4 tsp nutmeg
Rum Glaze - 1 cup powdered sugar, 2 T rum
Kahlua Glaze - 1 cup powdered sugar, 2 Kahlua
Coffee Glaze - 1 cup powdered sugar, 2 T coffee, 1 tsp vanilla extract
Lemon Glaze - 1 cup powdered sugar, 2 T lemon juice
Orange Glaze - 1 cup powdered sugar, 2 T orange juice
Maple Glaze - 1 cup powdered sugar, 1 T melted butter, 1/4 cup maple syrup
Banana Glaze - 1 cup powdered sugar, 1/4 mashed banana, 1/2 tsp vanilla, 2 T melted butter
Chocolate Glaze - 1 cup powdered sugar, 2 T melted butter, 2 T boiling water, 1/2 tsp vanilla, 2 oz unsweetened chocolate, melted

Caramel Glaze - In a saucepan combine, 4 T butter, 1/2 cup brown sugar and 1/3 cup heavy cream.  Bring to a rolling boil and boil for 1 minute.  Shut off the heat and remove pan from stove.  Let cool for 3-5 minutes and then stir in 1 cup powdered sugar.  Use immediately.

Nutella Glaze - simple melt 1/4 cup nutella in the microwave until it is loose - (10 second intervals) and drizzle over scones immediately.
