Lighthouse Series - Southwest Ledge, New Haven, CT

The Southwest Ledge Lighthouse is located in Connecticut in New Haven Harbor on a reef. It is three stories tall, 45 feet in height and eight sided, made of cast iron. A roof covers the top two stories and the lantern room on the top of the structure has eight sides as well.
The lighthouse was one of the first built on a cylindrical iron foundation that addressed the issue of ice shifting.  The lighthouse was completed in 1877.  It was automated in 1953. It is still in operation today.
