Two lighthouses in Maine are up for sale; Boon Island Light Station and Halfway Rock Light Station. Both lighthouses are being "sold" by the government, yet the new owners will have to abide by unusual terms. The lighthouses will have to remain as navigational aids and any work done will require permission from the government. In essence, people will have the ability to say they own the lighthouses, but not the ability to actually own them. The government is banking on someone who wants to use their money to preserve the lighthouses so they can still operate.
Through the years lighthouses have been sold to individuals and Preservation LLC's so it's not a new concept.
