Memorial Day 2016 falls on Monday, May 30th. It's a federal holiday set aside to honor those who died while serving in the armed forces. (Memorial Day is different from Veteran's Day in that Memorial Day celebrates those who died while serving our country.)
Flags are placed on graves of service members, people visit cemeteries, and parades are held.
Because it's a federal holiday, schools, post offices, and many businesses are closed which gives families the chance to celebrate together. Due to the day being close to the start of summer, it's common for pools to open, picnics to be had, and other outdoor traditions to be followed.
This week, I'll be posting recipe round ups of favored Memorial Day foods.
